Resocialization - the process of replacing previously learned norms and values with new ones as a part of a transition in life (pg 115)
In the Avengers movie, Natasha Romanoff appears to be a normal girl but she is actually working for S.H.E.I.L.D. She is one of the heros in the movie, but she remarks about her past. She had a bad start and made bad decisions. She remarks about the red in her ledger and becoming a spy at a very early age. She was raised to do things one way and she learned there was another way, a good way.
Chapter 6: Deviance
Self-fulfilling prophecy - an inaccurate statement or belief that, by altering the situation, becomes accurate; a prediction that causes itself to come true (pg 160)
Black Widow was kidnapped and enhanced both psycho-technologically and biotechnologically in the "Red Room" at Department X. She was brainwashed to be a villain and actually tried to kill Iron-Man. She even enlisted the help of her love Hawkeye for this mission. She wanted to be good and with the help of Hawkeye she was able to break free of her brainwashed state and become a member of The Avengers.
Chapter 8: Race and Ethnicity as Lived Experience
Passing - presenting yourself as a member of a different racial or ethnic group than the one you were born into (pg 225) Natalie Rushman is the alias that Natalia Romanova uses when she applies to be an assistant to Pepper in the movie Iron Man 2. She Americanizes her Russian name so that she can properly blend in. She has to pass herself off as this unimposing woman so that no one suspects her to be this bad ass Russian spy.
Chapter 10: The Macro-Micro Link in Social Institutions: Politics, Education, and Religion
Power - the ability to impose one's will on others (pg 281)
Due to Black Widow recieving a different version of the Super-Soldier serum she is extremely agile and has a great ability to fight. When you couple that with great intellegience and the ability to psychologically manipulate people, you get a person that could be dangerously powerful. In the Avenger's movie, when she speaks with Loki in"Hulk's glass prison", she maniputes him into telling her what his plan is.
Chapter 5: Seperate and Together: Life in Groups
Group- a collection of people who share some attribute, identify with one another, and interact with each other (pg 127)
The Avengers initiative gathered together many super heroes. It was not an easy alliance at first. With Iron man and Captain America fighting, Tony Stark trying to bring out the Hulk gets Thor all in a tizy. Black Widow and Hawk eye were great friends. It took Phil Coulson dieing for the group of heroes to unite and beat the villian Loki. While they did not see eye to eye all the time, the Avengers definately represent a great group of Super Heroes, my personal favorite being Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanova.
